Removing Rust With Citric Acid : 5 Steps (with Pictures)

I came accross this article and thought I’d give out a go. Got plenty of rusty bits in the garage. https://www.instructables.com/id/Removing-Rust-with-Citric-Acid/

Bought some citric acid crystals off eBay and mixed it with water roughly a teaspoon full per 1/4 pint . It works with best results after 48 hours – impressed.

  1. Hi Steve,
I’ll have to give it a try. I’ve been using white vinegar which works well also. It takes a few days but even will strip some paints off.

  2. I just buy the cheapest white vinegar I can find at Walmart or whatever and use it straight. It’s typically about $1.00 gallon. Five gallons in a Rubbermaid container and even large parts can soak. I have a batch in my basement I’ve been using for about a year.
