Not quite sure why it’s called tappet adjustment as its really the rocker to valve gap that is being adjusted. Although I guess it in effect adjusts an equivalent gap down on the tappet to cam gap.

The rocker cover has been getting a bit noisier lately so I thought it time to check tappets again as it’s been several years since the last time.

This time I’m doing it cold which means a gap of 15 thou. I am a big believer in the SPQR (now Gunsons) Tappet Adjuster tool. 15 thou is equivalent to somewhere between 7 and 8 clicks …… so I went for 7 clicks and a bit. The tool makes the job a lot easier so long as the threads on the rocker screw are good and turn easily – unless someone in the past has damaged or over tightened them.

Job done in 30 minutes and then started the engine to a tappet noise free engine.

The main benefit using the tool is that if the gap is worn dome or curve shape then a flat feeler gauge will never give a correct gap.
