I noticed a crack in the steering rack support soon after i bought the car – as can be seen in photo – but couldn’t really get to it to weld. Apparently it is a common fault especially in rubber bumper motors due to the supports being longer than the chrome bumper equivalent.
A good wire brush and weld should hold it together.
The steering rack was replaced a couple of years ago and one of the earlier jobs i did was to align the rack steering column to the universal joint which was about 5mm out of alignment. The shim i added was on the support that had cracked so may have been the cause.
